UN: Ukraine has the most deaths from landmines

The ongoing war in eastern Ukraine has caused more deaths by landmines this year than any other conflict in the world.

According to the organization, between January and September, 103 people in the front line were killed or injured by mines alone. Since the outbreak of fighting between the Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian government units in April 2014, more than 2500 civilians have been killed. Approximately 9,000 people were injured. In total, the UN speaks of more than 10 000 deaths in the conflict.

Despite various attempts, a peace plan agreed in 2015 with international mediation has not been implemented to date. The current armistice is broken every day. Nearly 180 Ukrainian government soldiers were killed in 2017 and about one thousand injured.
