German Municipality Offers Two Weeks Free House Stay to Attract New Residents

Eisenhüttenstadt, a municipality in Brandenburg, Germany, is actively seeking new permanent residents near the Polish border. To entice potential residents, they are offering a two-week free stay in a furnished apartment as part of the 'Make Plans Now' immigration project.

Inviting New Residents

The initiative aims to attract former residents who wish to return, skilled workers, and entrepreneurs seeking a new environment.

Immigration Project Details

Selected individuals, who can apply starting from July, will have the opportunity to live in Eisenhüttenstadt for two weeks in September, free of charge. This experience allows them to explore the community and get to know the city better.

Activities and Opportunities

The municipality is organizing various activities such as tours, factory visits, and excursions to facilitate the integration of temporary visitors. Local businesses are also offering internships and job interviews in hopes of converting visitors into permanent residents.

Historical Background

Founded in 1950, Eisenhüttenstadt was the first fully planned city built under the former East German socialist government. Originally named Stalinstadt after Josef Stalin, it was later renamed Eisenhüttenstadt, meaning 'steelworks city'. The municipality, home to the largest integrated steelworks in East Germany, faces a declining population since the reunification in 1990.

With the 'Make Plans Now' project, Eisenhüttenstadt aims to reverse this trend and revitalize its community.
