Tourists Corfu in the stench

Tourists in the normally idyllic Corfu see their holidays ruined by a pervasive stench.

Corfu is one of the gems of the Ionian Sea, but does not have a waste processing plant. And the only garbage dump on the island is overcrowded. And so waste remains along the roads, so bewildered holidaymakers see.

The streets of the island are full of bags and boxes of waste. 'From the airport to our village we encountered many meters of waste every few kilometers', a tourist told VTM Nieuws. 'Because those bags and boxes stay there, everything starts to stink and rot. Even for the royal palace there is a large mountain of waste. '

A second rubbish dump would not be a luxury, but the island does not agree on the location of that facility, writes Het Nieuwsblad. Meanwhile, the flights to Corfu continue, according to tour operator TUI 'because the vkantie experience in the hotels is currently not threatened. '
