Hurricane on the way to Hawaii

For the first time in thirty years, a very heavy hurricane threatens to hit the American state of Hawaii.

The storm depression, now of the heaviest category 5, is still on the Pacific Ocean at about 800 kilometers southeast of the archipelago. Meteorologists expect the hurricane to decrease in strength to the, still dangerous, category 2 at the time this Thursday afternoon (local time) reaches the islands. Also warned for possible precipitation amounts between 250 and 370 millimeters.

The emergency services have been put in the highest state of readiness by the governor of the island.

At the last major hurricane on Hawaii, the 4-storm Iniki category in 1992, six people were killed, writes the USA Today newspaper.
