Suu Kyi did not want to talk about abuse

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has refused to talk to a high UN official about sexual violence against Rohingya women.

Pramila Patten, the UN envoy for sexual violence in conflict areas, visited Myanmar on a multi-day visit in December. She concluded afterwards disappointed that Suu Kyi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, was unwilling to hold a 'substantive discussion' about reports that security forces and militias are guilty of sexual violence on a large scale.

Patten and state adviser Suu Kyi sat around the table for about 45 minutes. The UN envoy called the meeting last week in a letter to Secretary General António Guterres a 'courtesy visit. 'Other senior Myanmar officials later told Patten that reports of atrocities were' exaggerated 'and' manufactured by the international community. '
