IS fighters leave stronghold at Damascus

A group of Islamic State fighters was evacuated Sunday morning from the last rebellious stronghold near the Syrian capital Damascus.

Syrian state media do not yet mention a deal that would allow the militants to leave the enclave around the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk.

With the recovery of the Yarmouk enclave, the Syrian government will have recaptured the last besieged rebel stronghold in western Syria, although parts of the territory at the borders with Turkey, Iraq and Jordan remain beyond its control.

According to the Observatory, the buses entered the enclave after midnight to evacuate the fighters and their families. They have left for the Syrian region Badia, a sparsely populated area east of the capital.
