Russia tackles suspected attack on Saint Petersburg

The Russian security service FSB has arrested a suspect for the bomb attack in St.

In the attack with a nail bomb in a supermarket, thirteen people were injured. The suspect would have planned and executed the attack. The FSB did not provide details about the identity or residence of the suspect.

'The suspect was transferred to the Russian investigation committee for further proceedings', the FSB reports in a statement. The suspect is now being questioned.

Islamic State demanded the attack on Friday, but could not argue that it was actually behind the bomb explosion. IS's claim came after Russian President Vladimir Putin called the attack an act of terrorism.

Russia is a regular target of attacks by Islamic militant groups. In April, Islamic terrorists committed a bomb attack on the St. Petersburg metro. As a result, fifteen people died. That attack was claimed by a militant group that said that the suicide bomber acted on behalf of al-Qaeda. The Russian police arrested several suspects from mainly Muslim states in the former Soviet territory in Central Asia.
