People smugglers receive 360 years of imprisonment

Heavy prison sentences for a gang of people smugglers in Greece.

Seven other smugglers were sentenced to six to twelve years in prison. Six Greeks who helped them, including a policeman, must therefore spend one to five years on water and bread.

The gang had smuggled 112 refugees from countries like Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Iran. They were hidden in caves and farms in Crete. There they lived under miserable conditions. The intention was that they would be smuggled to Italy, and from there to Great Britain or Northern Europe. In March last year, the Greek and British authorities had found 112 migrants.
