Mugabe appeared in public again

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe appeared in public for the first time since the seizure of power by the army.

He sat in a large wooden chair and was cheered by the crowd as he opened the ceremony.

The army took control of the state television this week and placed the 93-year-old Mugabe under house arrest. The military intervention in Zimbabwe seems like a coup, although the military did not want to speak of a coup.

Members of his party ZANU-PF meet Friday to draft a resolution to dismiss Mugabe at the weekend and lay the foundation for his deposition next week if he refuses to resign.
