Suspects Love Parade Duisburg for judge

Ten suspects are Friday in court for their share in the drama during the Love Parade in Duisburg in 2010.

The Love Parade is the largest techno event in the world. The site in Duisburg offered up to 250,000 people at the time, but at least 400,000 visitors came to the festival. At about five o'clock in the afternoon the drama occurred when the outgoing visitors tumbled and tumbled at tunnels. Thousands of people could no longer go any further.

Most of the deaths were caused by asphyxiation. Ten women and eleven men died on the spot or later in a hospital. Among them was the 22-year-old Dutchman Jan Willem van Helsdingen from Hasselt near Zwolle.

Justice appointed ten people as responsible for the disaster, six officials and four members of the organization. A court found in 2016 that there was insufficient evidence for prosecution, but on appeal the German Supreme Court decided that the suspects could be prosecuted.
