spain - Atlético Madrid and Villarreal are finalizing a €50 million deal for Álex Baena, a target for Aston Villa, with sources confirming negotiations and player's desire to join Atleti.

Atlético Madrid Close to Signing Álex Baena

Atlético Madrid and Villarreal are in the final stages of a deal worth €50 million for midfielder Álex Baena, who has been a target for Aston Villa. The transfer, including bonuses, is set to bring the 23-year-old to Atleti, fulfilling manager Diego Simeone's desire to strengthen the squad.

Key Details of the Deal

The agreement involves a base fee of €45 million with an additional €5 million in bonuses. Villarreal adjusted their asking price to meet the €50 million mark, considering Baena's buyout clause was initially set at €55 million. Baena, showing a strong desire to join Atleti, had already agreed to the terms, despite interest from Aston Villa and a Saudi Pro League club.

Player's Importance to Atlético Madrid

Manager Diego Simeone had expressed the need to enhance the team following an early exit from Club World Cup play. Baena's potential arrival is seen as a significant boost to Atleti's midfield, with Simeone aiming to strengthen the squad further by potentially securing deals for Atalanta full-back Matteo Ruggeri and United States international Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis.
