Australia wants monument for Captain Cook

The Australian government wants to create a new monument to commemorate April 29, the day that the British explorer James Cook set foot on the continent for the first time in 1770.

The memorial site with attention to two cultures must be completed in 2020, 250 years after Cook arrived and made contact with the indigenous residents. 'It was the first meeting between Europeans and Australian Aborigines here on the east coast,' said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull when presenting the plan. ' It gives us the opportunity to show the view from the ship and from the beach ''.
