thailand - Thailand mandates medical evidence for cannabis consumption amidst a crackdown on drug smuggling, affecting the booming cannabis industry and tourism.

Thailand Mandates Medical Proof for Cannabis Use

The Thai Health Minister announces the necessity of a medical certificate for cannabis consumption, a significant shift in regulations since Thailand legalized recreational cannabis in 2022.

Booming Cannabis Industry

With tens of thousands of cannabis-related businesses, Thailand's cannabis industry is valued at around $1.3 billion, projected to reach $9.6 billion by 2030.

Drug Smuggling Concerns

Thailand plans to tighten sales regulations due to a surge in tourists attempting to smuggle drugs out of the country. Recent arrests in Georgia and Sri Lanka linked to cannabis smuggling highlight the issue.

British authorities report a joint operation with Thailand resulting in seizing over 2 tons of cannabis from airline passengers. Since July last year, more than fifty Britons have been arrested in Thailand for attempted cannabis smuggling.

Regulation Challenges

Despite the aim for medicinal use, recreational cannabis consumption rises due to lack of regulations. The government faces challenges in passing cannabis laws, with conflicting views within the coalition government.

Concerns about children's access to cannabis and addiction have sparked protests, prompting the government to reconsider cannabis's legal status.

Activists urge swift regulation to provide clarity for businesses looking to contribute to the growing cannabis industry in Thailand.
