baltic sea - NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced a new mission named 'Baltic Watch' to protect telecommunication cables under the Baltic Sea from sabotage and threats.

The NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte revealed the launch of a new mission called 'Baltic Watch' to enhance monitoring and deterrence in the region to protect telecommunication cables from any sabotage or threats. The mission includes deploying frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and an unmanned aerial vehicle fleet to strengthen military presence and patrols in the area.

Rutte emphasized the importance of safeguarding the subsea cables as they play a critical role not only in energy supply but also in transmitting over 95% of global internet traffic. He highlighted the need to prevent repeated incidents of sabotage and cyber attacks targeting the Baltic Sea telecommunication cables to ensure security and prosperity in the region.

During a summit in Helsinki, NATO leaders, along with EU Commission member in charge of Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, discussed measures to combat threats posed by disruptive actions including hybrid warfare tactics. The leaders underscored the necessity of increasing defense investments to address hybrid threats and enhance defense capabilities against countries bolstering their military capabilities.
