cairo - Saif Gaddafi wants to participate in the presidential elections in Libya next year. Saif is the son of the Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, who was killed in 2011.

The newspaper Egypt Today writes that the 45-year-old Saif enjoys the indispensable support of important tribes in Libya. The elections are scheduled for mid-2018. As President, Kaddafi hopes to gain the support of the United Nations to make Libya a stable nation.

Saif is the second son of Muammar Kaddafi. He studied at the London School of Economics. During the reign of his father he would have functioned as prime minister and was named as successor. The International Criminal Court ICC in The Hague issued an arrest warrant against him after the regime of his father was overthrown. Saif was among other things accused of killing and torturing civilians. He denied.

In November 2011, he was arrested in Libya by one of the many militias. A court in Tripoli sentenced him in absentia to death in 2015. Saif Kaddafi was released in 2016. The Libyan government granted him amnesty last summer.
