Record number of nominees Nobel peace prize

oslo - This year again more people than ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize: 376, compared with the previous record of 278 in 2014. This has Olav Njølstad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute said Tuesday.

Candidates for the prize were nominated to 1st February. The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee which ultimately allocates the prize Monday held its first meeting. The committee never says who's nominated, but names are usually published by the person making the nomination. For example, the names have been cases of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the Colombian government and the FARC, and even those of the controversial US presidential candidate Donald Trump. Also Greek islanders Rescuing Syrian refugees from the Mediterranean are nominated.
