Protests against brown coal in Germany

The opponents of the brown coal mines want to exert pressure on the World Climate Change Conference in Bonn for a quick abolition of coal. The activist organization Ende Gelände has announced blockade actions with more than a thousand demonstrators. The police charge for largely peaceful protests, but warns of the dangers of entering the mines themselves.

Power generation with lignite is by far the most environmentally harmful form of power generation and co-responsible for the possible failure to meet German climate goals. Despite all efforts for other ways of energy generation, almost a quarter of German electricity is still coming from lignite.
