cairo - Former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik was arrested in his home in the United Arab Emirates. Sources around Shafik's family said Saturday that the former Prime Minister is being transferred to Egypt. Shafik had said Wednesday that he is going to stand as a candidate for the presidential elections in Egypt.

It is not known why the former prime minister has been arrested. The government of the United Arab Emirates and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt did not want to respond to the message.

Former air force commander Shafik left Egypt after losing the presidential election in 2012 of the later deposed Mohamed Mursi. Egypt will elect a new president in 2018. The current head of state, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has not yet put himself forward, but the Egyptians expect him to do so.
