- Scientists from the University of Southampton have succeeded in developing a new type of data carrier that get almost indestructible is. The so-called 5D disc can withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees and is 13.8 billion years with.

Data is written on a disc with a laser. This draws minitieuze dots in the glass, which in addition to the three-dimensional position of the dot is also the size and the orientation thereof is of importance. The inventors therefore propose that the data is stored in five dimensions.

Such 5D disc is also another quite spacious in terms of storage: fits up to 360 terabytes on. That is roughly equal to 7200 Blu-Ray discs.

The goal is to use the slices to capture important knowledge of human history and ultimately save somewhere in space, so that it is preserved forever. Currently, there are already discs bearing the universal rights of man, Newton's Opticks and the Bible.
