New Catalan government to get started

World June 2, 2018 15:03

barcelona - The separatists have regained control in the regional parliament of Catalonia on Saturday with the swearing in of a new government. This puts an end to the direct domination by the Spanish government from Madrid.

The government, led by regional Prime Minister Quim Torra, a close ally of the former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, begins on the day that the socialist Pedro Sánchez is officially sworn in as the new Spanish Prime Minister. Sánchez said that he wants talks about Catalonia, but stressed that he is opposed to every referendum on independence.

The predecessor of Sánchez, the conservative Mariano Rajoy, took the direct reign of Catalonia at the end of October after the separatists led by Puigdemont held a referendum on independence that was considered unlawful by Spanish courts.

According to the Spanish constitution, the direct administration of Madrid would expire at the time that a new regional government was installed in Barcelona.
