Irish vote for liberalization abortion law

Irish vote for liberalization abortion law

World May 25, 2018 22:39

dublin - The Irish seem to be largely in favor of liberalizing the strict abortion legislation in the predominantly Catholic country. According to the first exit poll, 68 percent of those entitled to vote said yes to the amendment of the law on Friday.

This was partly due to the high turnout for this loaded referendum.

The other 32 percent want everything to stay the same, as determined 35 years ago. Now the law prohibits abortion and a fetus has the same rights as the mother. In 2013 strict rules were relaxed and interruption of pregnancy was allowed if the mother's life was in danger.

The official result of the plebiscite will be announced on Saturday. The counting of the votes starts at 8.00 am local time.
