dublin - The Irish Deputy Prime Minister Frances Fitzgerald steps up. According to a colleague she filed her resignation during a cabinet meeting. In this way the politician probably prevents the government from falling.
Opposition party Fianna Fáil had threatened to file a no-confidence vote against Fitzgerald on Tuesday. The minority government of Leo Varadkar is dependent on the tolerance of that party. As a result, the political crisis threatened to run out of early elections.
The deputy prime minister was under fire because of the way she dealt with a whistleblower who brought to light abuses in the police. Fitzgerald appeared to have received several e-mails in the past with information about plans to undermine the credibility of the police officer.
