barcelona - There are demonstrations in various locations in Barcelona on Wednesday, after 14 people were arrested earlier on the suspicion of cooperation in the October 1 referendum. The government in Madrid sees it as illegal. There are also 22 searches, including at the Catalan 'ministries' of foreign and economic affairs.

From the whole city, protesters are now on their way to these ministries. 'We have lived in a dictatorship, we do not want to see it again,' says Jose Padilla from the village of La Garriga. 'They get rid of all our rights. '

Among other things, at the Ramblas and the Diagonal are demonstrations. People shout 'We will vote!' And 'Independencia!', Or 'Independence!'.

In Catalonia and in the rest of Spain, there has been a reaction to the power of Madrid. 'The vote must continue. If that does not happen then that means the government's 'coup' has been working, 'said Catalan MP Ana Gabriel at the central city square, where the regional government is home.

This morning, the Catalan president Puigdemont and Parliament President Carme Forcadell gathered for urgent consultation. Puigedemont will make a statement later this afternoon.

The people arrested are part of the Junqueras club, the Catalan Vice President. He is responsible for organizing the referendum. Among the arrested is a top official of the Catalan tax service, which should be independent after the referendum.

Last night, searches were also conducted at Terrassa and Sabadell and polls were taken. There hundreds of people were shown, tens of thousands were dragged by the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police.

The region of Catalonia wants to hold a referendum on independence on October 1. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said that the government has asked the Constitutional Court to hold the referendum invalid. The Spanish law does not allow part of the country to separate itself.
