paramaribo - The Court of Justice, the supreme court in Suriname, determines whether or not the criminal proceedings will continue due to the December killings. President Desi Bouterse is chief suspect.

In February, the Public Prosecutor (OM) appealed against the decision of the ward to pass the process. The ward council filed a request from the Attorney General to stop the prosecution process. This request was a Bouterse order. He used Article 148 of the Surinamese Constitution, which allows the President to stop criminal proceedings if state security is at risk.

If the court decides to reject the appeal of the OM on Thursday, the ward council is resumed. Hugo Essed, the lawyer of the relatives, assumes that the court rejects the appeal from the OM because there would be no legal basis.

In the process it is the murder of Bouterse's fifteen political opponents in December 1982. Bouterse, then army leader, and 24 others are suspected of this.\n  \n   \n    \n    \n   \n   \n   \n      \n   \n     President Desi Bouterse is the main suspect in the criminal proceedings on the December killings.\n    \n   \n     Photo: ANP
