bangkok - Thailand becomes the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage, marking a historic milestone for equality in the region.

Thailand has officially recognized same-sex marriage, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to do so. The bill was approved by the Senate in June and required royal approval. The law will take effect 120 days after publication in the Royal Gazette, allowing LGBT couples in Thailand to register their marriage in January next year.

This decision marks the culmination of a long campaign for marriage equality in Thailand. Waaddao Anne Chumaporn, founder of Bangkok Pride, described the law as a historic step towards equal rights in the country. In celebration, a mass wedding for over a thousand LGBT couples is planned for January 22 in Bangkok.

The new law allows same-sex couples to adopt children, enjoy the same tax benefits as heterosexual couples, inherit property, and make medical decisions for incapacitated partners. Thailand has also replaced gender-specific terms in its legislation with gender-neutral language, reflecting a more inclusive approach.

Although Thailand has laws that prohibit discrimination, LGBT individuals still face prejudice and even violence in the conservative society. The current government, led by the Pheu Thai party, prioritized the legalization of same-sex marriage as a key goal. The law is considered one of the most inclusive, but further amendments to other laws are necessary for comprehensive legal protection of LGBT rights in Thailand.

Thailand's move towards marriage equality follows similar steps taken by Taiwan in 2019 and Nepal last year. The recognition of same-sex marriage in these countries reflects a growing trend towards greater acceptance and inclusivity worldwide.
