Dismantle Belgian nuclear power plants more expensive

The total cost of the decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Belgium is estimated at more than 15 billion euros.

This appears from a report from the National Institute for Radioactive Waste and enriched Fissile Materials (Niras).

It appears to be more expensive to dismantle the nuclear power stations in Doel and Tihange, but the costs of radioactive waste management have also increased. The Niras argues for a social debate about a solution, especially for high-level radioactive waste. Last month it has been proposed to store it deep underground.

'Without the public support, even the most robust technical solution is unachievable', says Niras director Marc Demarche.

The government wants to shut down the power stations in 2025, but it has recently been talked about extending the lifespan of several reactors. Neighboring countries are concerned about safety.
