Widow DDR chief Honecker deceased

- Margot Honecker, widow of the former communist leader of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) Erich Honecker, is deceased. That media reported in Chile, the country where she lived. Honecker became 89 years old.

The pair moved to Chile in 1993. Margot Honecker was known as the,, purple witch 'because of the color of her hair and her toughness.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the dissolution of the GDR in 1990, Erich Honecker has been indicted because he had border security people shoot to the wall trying to get across.

He fled in 1991 with his family to Moscow, asked unsuccessfully for asylum in the Chilean embassy and returned forced in Germany. In 1993, because of his health, the case against him was stopped and he was allowed to leave for Santiago. Erich Honecker died a year later at the age of 81 from liver cancer.
