Water levels in Rhine increased further

World January 7, 2018 07:39

cologne - The water level in the Rhine in Germany rose further during the night from Saturday to Sunday. At Cologne the water is so high that shipping has been shut down. Scots and defenses must prevent the old city center from under water.

The situation is likely to improve in the course of next week, the German authorities expect.

Düsseldorf expects the highest water levels on Tuesday. The city has 40,000 sandbags on hand. At Trier the river Moselle has left its banks. The water is also high on the Saar and the Danube.

The high water levels of the Rhine are caused by continuing rain showers in the Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg states, in the southwest of Germany. All that water goes via the Netherlands to the North Sea.
