Vermont also legalizes marijuana

montpelier - Vermont is the ninth American state that legalized the recreational use of marijuana. The Republican governor Phil Scott signed his letter on Monday, which was approved by parliament earlier this month.

From 1 July, persons aged 21 and older may have a maximum of one ounce of weed (almost 30 grams), two mature cannabis plants and four cuttings. Trade in the soft drug remains prohibited.

'Today, with mixed feelings, I signed H. 511,' said Scott, referring to the number of the new legal measure. He noted that he had vetoed an earlier version of the bill because it would have encouraged the sale of weed.

Two neighboring states in New England, Massachusetts and Maine, have already taken cannabis from the penal code. The House of Representatives of New Hampshire agreed last week with a similar arrangement. Governor Chris Sununu, also a Republican, is a declared opponent of legalization.
