manaus - A Canadian who had been missing for five years is 10,000 kilometers from where he was last seen resurfaced in Brazil. He would have enormous distance traveled on foot over the years.

Anton Pilipa, who suffers from schizophrenia, disappeared in 2012 in Vancouver. His family for years looked for the man, and had almost given up all hope when she suddenly got a call.

A Canadian-born Brazilian police woman saw the 29 year old Pilipa walking barefoot along a mud road. He had no passport or other form of identification. Eventually she was met by embassies and international organizations to reach his family.

'I was stunned,' says Anton's brother to the Daily Mail. 'I thought he was dead. That was the only explanation I could think of for his disappearance. '

Anton showed Canada through the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil to be traveled. And without a passport and with just a bundle of clothes in his bag.

According to his brother Anton had a bizarre mission: to go to the National Library of Argentina in Buenos Aires. When he finally arrived there after traveling for years, he did not come in because he could not identify. Therefore he traveled but returned to Brazil.

During his trip, he picked fruit and he rummaged in search of food and clothes in garbage cans. He was sometimes helped by strangers. He was robbed several times of what little he had and lost all his toenails during a 800 kilometer trek where he walked alone through a dangerous jungle full of poisonous spiders and dangerous alligators.

In all that time Anton has changed enormously outdoor life. 'He looked pretty rough out,' said his brother. 'The journey has its signs left on his body and face. And he had a lot less hair the last time I saw him. '

The BBC Anton says he knows he was lucky. 'I am very happy that I can return to my family. '
