vatican city - A 525-year-old copy of a letter from Christopher Columbus that was stolen from the Vatican was returned to the Pope on Thursday. This happened after joint investigation by the American Ministry of Security and archaeological experts from the Holy See.

'We return it to the rightful owner,' said the US Ambassador to the Vatican Callista Gingrich on the transfer of the epistle. It took place in a library room full of frescoes where tens of thousands of rare, historical articles are kept.

Columbus wrote the letter to the Spanish king at sea in February 1493, four months after the discovery of the New World, during the return journey to Europe. He reported on his findings and already bred goodwill for the financing of a new trip.
