World May 22, 2018 05:57

washington - US President Donald Trump launched new sanctions against Venezuela on Monday. The measures come one day after the presidential elections in the Central American country, where the incumbent president Nicolás Maduro was re-elected. The US does not recognize the result.

Under the new sanctions, it is forbidden for Americans to participate in financial transactions related to the Venezuelan sovereign debt or to the debts of state enterprises. 'This money belongs to the Venezuelan people,' Trump said in a statement in which he also called Maduro to 'restore democracy' and to hold 'free and fair elections. '

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza called the sanctions 'madness, barbaric and in absolute contradiction with international law. '
