US Afghanistan commander wants more soldiers

World February 9, 2017 16:03

washington - The US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson, has asked Thursday for additional several thousand foreign troops. Nicholson said in Washington that the stalemate in the fighting with the extremist Taliban can only be broken with more troops.

The general said he has enough people available to him for training missions, advice and assistance to the Afghan forces, but he still misses several thousand soldiers to deal with terrorists. It is believed that his request will be quickly transferred to the new US president, Donald Trump.

Trump has often turned against the US lead in military missions abroad. He finds that the costs against the benefits outweigh and even Americans selflessly for others pull the chestnuts out of the fire. He also wants to spend less on the NATO alliance, while other NATO members just would have to cough up more. NATO is already involved in the fighting in Afghanistan since 2003.
