gdansk - A total of 667 prisoners have escaped from the German death camp Auschwitz. The way in which the late Polish Kazimierz Piechowski (98) died in Gdansk, was unique and made him famous. He stole uniforms, weapons and a car from the SS with two fellow pilots and drove the camp while saluting.

Piechowski was two years earlier, in June 1940, as a political prisoner to the concentration camp that was still under construction. After his daring piece, the Germans did not get him anymore. He became a member of the underground Polish army and fought against the Nazis.

After the war, the former Auschwitz prisoner was arrested by the communist authorities. They also put him behind the bars for ten years.
