Ukraine arrests 'heroine' Savchenko

kiev - The Ukrainian authorities have arrested parliamentarian and former Air Force pilots Nadja Savchenko. Prosecutors accuse her of plotting an attack on parliament. That decided Thursday to withdraw the immunity of Savchenko, after which she was arrested.

Savchenko grew into a national hero in Ukraine after being imprisoned in 2014 by pro-Russian separatists. She was detained for a long time in Russia, but was released in 2016 by a prisoner exchange. Savchenko went into politics in her homeland, where she regularly criticized the current authorities.

The politician himself states that undercover agents were trying to incite her to a plot to overthrow the government. They wanted to discredit her, says Savchenko. In her own words she played along to bring the authorities' nefarious plans to light.
