amsterdam - Heineken may sell its Chinese activities. According to sources, China Resources Beer (CR Beer) is in discussion with Heineken about a takeover of the division. The deal would involve an amount of more than 1 billion dollars.
The deal includes three Heineken breweries in China. Heineken's distribution activities are also part of the agreement, as are the Heineken brands in the country.
Major brewers such as Heineken, AB InBev and Carlsberg face various emerging markets with continued competition from local brewers. They also feel that they are competing because they all want to take a slice of the growth in those markets.
In terms of volume, China is the largest beer market in the world. Heineken accounted for 0.5 percent of the Chinese market in 2016. CR Beer holds around a quarter of the Chinese beer market.
