Typo hacker takes hundreds of millions

dhaka - It could have been one of the largest digital crack ever. But also not a typo of cyber criminals entered the theft of nearly a billion dollars.

The hackers still managed to make some eighty million dollar prize in the robbery at the central bank of Bangladesh last month.

The criminals had broken into the bank in Dhaka system then could the Federal Reserve Bank in New York bombard with requests to transfer money from Bangladesh to bank accounts in the Philippines and Sri Lanka, say bank employees told Reuters.

Four of those transfers totaling $ 81 million went without a problem. At the fifth, however, it went wrong. The hacker had the payee name misspelled. Instead of 'foundation' was 'fandation' input, and thus the alarm bells went off.

The transfer went through Deutsche Bank, where the security noticed the typo. Was immediately contacted the bank in Bangladesh, and the transactions were put stop. In total there would be transferred otherwise still 850 to $ 870 million.

According to the authorities there is little chance that the hackers are arrested. It may take months before any money can be retrieved, if any at all will succeed.

Security experts said the hackers had good knowledge of the computer system of the bank. Probably spied on them bank employees for months.

Last year
