Turkish judge releases Amnesty chairman

World January 31, 2018 13:00

istanbul - A Turkish court ordered the release of the arrested president of Amnesty International in Turkey, Taner Kiliç. That's what his lawyer reported. The man had been detained since June last year, on suspicion of terrorist activities.

According to the prosecutors, Kiliç downloaded the message app ByLock at the time, with which Fethullah Gülen supporters communicate with each other. According to the Turkish government, it is behind the failed coup d'état of July 2016.

Amnesty International has long demanded the immediate release of the chairman, also because there is no evidence of involvement with the Gülen movement. The human rights organization started a petition for the release that, according to Amnesty itself, has been signed by more than one million people worldwide.
