Turkish court rejects appeal Wikipedia

ankara - A Turkish court rejected the appeal of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia on Friday against a government decision to block access to the website. This was reported by the State Press Office Anadolu. The case has raised concerns about censorship in Turkey.

The court in Ankara rejected the appeal submitted by the Wikimedia Foundation, which Wikipedia operates. Anadolu quoted the court saying that freedom of expression is a fundamental right, but this can be restricted in cases where there is a 'need for regulation'.

The Turkish Telecommunications Supervisor said last week that Wikipedia was blocked under a law that could ban access to websites if there is a threat to national security.

Wikipedia has no longer been read in Turkey since Saturday. According to the Turkish authorities, in the digital reference work, Turkey supports terrorist organizations and refuses administrators to adjust.
