Turkey threatens Trump over Jerusalem

World December 5, 2017 15:36

washington - Turkey Tuesday threatened to break all diplomatic relations with the United States if US President Trump recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Arab League, the Palestinian Authority and Saudi Arabia have also complained about Trump's plan. Trump therefore has telephoned the Palestinian President Abbas and other Arab leaders on the matter. He also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

The foreign woman of the European Union, Federica Mogherini, warned Tuesday that 'any action that undermines the peace efforts to create two states for Israelis and Palestinians should be avoided'. Officials in Washington reported earlier that Trump would announce Wednesday as Jerusalem's capital city.

For decades, the UN has been striving to establish Jerusalem's status in peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. Peace would rest on two states that live side by side, a Jewish and a Palestinian. East Jerusalem would then become the capital of Palestine. The Arab East Jerusalem has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
