Turkey extends state of emergency again

World January 3, 2017 22:00

ankara - In Turkey, the state of emergency extended for three months until April 19th. The parliament voted in Ankara on Tuesday with the government's proposal.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus defended during an emotional debate the necessity inter alia by referring to adopt the continuing acts of terrorism in the country. The massacre in the posh nightclub in Istanbul during the New Year celebration was the last in line.

Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called last summer shortly after the failed coup of July 15 a state of emergency. In October, the extended first and now again. The Islamic-conservative government party AKP and the small ultra-nationalist MHP supported the motion. The center-left CHP and pro-Kurdish HDP were strongly opposed.
