Trump wants to revitalize steel sector

- The American president Donald Trump wants to revive the steel industry in his country at any cost, even if he has to impose import tariffs on it for other countries. That's what he said when he met a few governors in the White House.

'I want to bring the steel industry back to our country. If rates are needed, then only rates are needed. That may cost a little more, but then we get jobs, 'said Trump.

The US Department of Commerce advised Trump to take measures against cheap steel and aluminum from China, among others. That country is more often accused of overproduction and dumping of steel at too low prices. Trump said on Friday that he had not yet made a final decision on the matter.

Earlier in the day, data from the international trade association WSA showed that steel production in China slightly decreased in January compared to a year earlier. Worldwide, steel production did increase slightly.

It is the first time in times that there is a decline in steel production in China. The 64 countries that passed on their figures to the WSA together accounted for a production of 139.4 million tons of steel. That was 0.8 percent more than a year earlier. Slightly less than half of the total (67 million tons) came from China, where production fell by 0.9 percent. The figure on China is also an estimate by the WSA.
