Trump speaks State of the Union

World January 30, 2018 13:33

washington - The American president Donald Trump is holding his State of the Union Tuesday night (Dutch time), the annual 'throne speech' in which he can roll out his policy and know all about it. In Washington, there is plenty of speculation about the content of the speech- there is remarkably little leak this year.

Presidents traditionally use the State of the Union mainly to underline the common national interest and national unity. Trump has so far not been a president who sought unity.

According to the White House, Trump wants to emphasize the success of his tax reform and the economic growth that the United States now has, which he believes he has not yet received sufficient recognition for. He will confirm that he is rebuilding the US army and giving peace in the world.

Trump is not the first president to give a State of the Union while he is in trouble. The Russian investigation of special prosecutor Mueller is getting closer to Trump himself and politics is completely polarized. The question is whether he will also name the problems. Nixon made that mistake during the Watergate scandal in 1974. He stepped up the same year. Clinton knew in 1999 to avoid the mention of his impeachment and therefore seemed less focused on his own interest and more on that of the nation. Whether Trump knows how to touch that presidential tone must be apparent.
