'Trump abolishes positive discrimination'

World July 3, 2018 20:54

washington - The government of President Trump wants ethnic origin or race no longer to play a role in accepting or recruiting pupils and students. The president breaks with the education policy of his predecessor Barack Obama who was in favor of positive discrimination, which in the US is called affirmative action.

Obama wanted people from different backgrounds to be together at the same educational institution. Students and society would benefit from this 'mix'. Schools and universities were encouraged by federal government initiatives to recruit more students among ethnic minorities, for example.

The Minister of Justice Jeff Sessions started in November to examine the guidelines that the government gave to educational institutions to put affirmative action into practice without legal problems. Sessions now withdraws those guidelines, according to The New York Times. This form of positive discrimination has been limited by the Supreme Court, but has not been declared unlawful. But that may change with the imminent departure of the moderately conservative chief judge Anthony Kennedy.
