brussels - Israel must respect the right to peaceful protest and act proactively in the use of force. That said EU foreign chief Federica Mogherini after the Israeli army killed over forty Palestinians. She calls both sides to extreme restraint, to prevent further loss of life.
During the confrontations in the Gaza Strip, where Palestinians threw fire bombs and stones, at least 1600 wounded. Hamas and the organizers of the demonstrations in Gaza must ensure that they are strictly non-violent, according to the Italian.
Further escalation of the already very tense situation would lead to untold suffering for both peoples and further remove the perspective on peace and security, writes Mogherini. She repeated her call to both parties to return to the negotiating table and to work on a two-state solution. The EU is not in favor of unilaterally recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Mogherini recalls.
