The South Pole has a huge iceberg

amsterdam - Antarctica has a huge iceberg since Wednesday. The piece of ice, called Larsen C, is as big as the whole province of Gelderland. The breaking down of the plate would take a while: there has been a huge crack in the ice rock since 2011, 350 meters thick and more than 5,000 square kilometers in size.

Breaking ice sheets is a natural process, say scientists, who compare it with the growth and breaking of fingernails. At the water level, according to the researchers, breaking down giant plates also changes little. Researchers compare the situation in the South Pole with a glass of coke with ice cubes. If a block melts, suddenly there is no more moisture in the glass, so it sounds.

Because the starfish is on the South Pole, the process is followed by satellites. The European space agency ESA has told Twitter that it will be taking pictures later in the day.

The ice sheet Larsen, where C accounts for ten percent, is named after Norwegian whalers Carl Anton Larsen- who passed in December 1893. Knowing more? Then take a look at the website of Project Midas, the organization that follows the situation in Antarctica.
