paris - The Dutchman Erik Loopstra and the Dutch Russian Vadim Banine have won an inventor prize on Thursday. They received the European Inventor Award from the European patent office.

Loopstra and Banine work for ASML. There they have developed so-called lithography with extreme ultraviolet light. This technique makes it possible to make small, super-fast computer chips.

The inventors' prize last year went to Jan van den Boogaart, who was involved in a way to quickly detect malaria. In 2016, engineer Anton van Zanten, who developed the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), won. This helps motorists who threaten to lose control of the vehicle. And in 2015 the Inventor Award went to the Austrian Franz Amtmann and the Frenchman Philippe Maugars, who developed the technology behind contactless payment for the Dutch company NXP.
