the hague - The International Criminal Court (ICC) sentenced the former Congolese Vice President Jean-Pierre Bemba to a fine of 300,000 euros and 12 months in jail in a professional case. The court declared Bemba rather guilty of bribery of witnesses.

The 55-year-old Bemba was acquitted of war crimes in appeal this June, but has now been convicted of influencing witnesses during his trial. He no longer needs to sit down for 12 months in prison, because he has spent a lot of time in prison.

Bemba initially wanted to make a run for the presidency of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the December elections, but the chief judge in his country withdrew because of his previous conviction in March 2017 for the bribery of witnesses. He also received a fine of 300,000 euros with a year in prison.
