This is the conclusion of the American geriatrician and neurologist Claudia Kawas after a long-term study among the elderly.

She followed 1700 nineties over a period of fifteen years. Most of these very old people have ever smoked or are still smoking. These 'survivors' are often also modest drinkers. 'I have no explanation for this, but I am convinced that modest drinking helps', she says to English media.

What the researchers also noticed that this group of 'superoudjes' has worked longer in many cases. And also: that they are positive in life, are more social and more active than others.

But the most startling conclusion is that a little overweight is no objection. 'Being young and thin is fine, but old and too thin is bad for someone over 80'.

Kawas emphasizes that we still know far too little why one person really lives longer than the other. 'Good genes' probably also play a very big role.
