- The alliance of Syrian militias backed by the United States has stepped up the offensive against Islamic State near the IS stronghold Raqqa. The attack is focused on an area where the terrorist group has control over a former air base, letting out a monitoring group and a Kurdish official Monday.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), where the Kurdish YPG militia belongs, launched last week's attacks in areas north of Raqqa who IS in hands. The town itself is not a goal of the current offensive, said SDF.
The operation is now focusing on Tabqa, about 60 kilometers west of Raqqa city. IS captured the airbase at Tabqa in 2014 by government forces during the rapid advance of the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.
